In the morning of February 27th, 2010 the Chilean people awoke to the nations strongest earthquake in 50 years. It was a 30 second quake 500 times more powerful than the earthquake that hit Haiti a month earlier.
Although due to preparedness and population density Chile weathered the disaster better than Haiti, the earthquake destroyed 200,000 homes, killing nearly 500 and injuring hundreds more. 100 more chileans have been reported missing. Thousands of hospitals and schools were destroyed and 93 percent of the country lost electric power for days, making tending to injuries and returning to a sense normalcy that much more difficult.
Compounding the damage, from this quake, were around 400 aftershocks, some almost as powerful as the original earthquake.
Reports of lack of food, water and even electricity still get to us from family and friends currently in Chile. Some of them worry that repairs might not be ready in time for winter as the fall starts.
This is why we need you to join us and help the Chilean people with this event. There is a cover charge of $10.
